Android TV / Google TV Setup & Troubleshooting

Android TV & Google TV Setup

Universal Remote works with all Android TV and Google TV devices including Chromecast with Google TV, NVIDIA Shield, Xiaomi Mi Box, and TVs from Sony, Philips, and Hisense running Android/Google TV.

How to Connect

  1. Connect your iPhone and Android TV device to the same WiFi network
  2. Open Universal Remote — your device appears automatically
  3. Tap your device to start pairing
  4. A PIN code appears on your TV screen
  5. Enter the PIN in the app — this creates a secure TLS-encrypted connection
  6. You're paired! The connection is saved for future sessions

Common Issues

PIN not appearing on TV

  • Make sure your TV screen is visible — the PIN may be behind another window
  • Go to TV Settings → Remotes & Accessories → Pair remote or phone
  • Restart your Android TV device and try again

Pairing fails after entering PIN

  • Make sure you enter the PIN quickly — it may expire after 30 seconds
  • Check that your TV's date and time are set correctly (TLS requires accurate time)
  • Try restarting your Android TV device completely

Device not found

  • Android TV uses mDNS discovery — make sure your router supports multicast
  • Check that both devices are on the same WiFi network
  • Try entering the device's IP address manually (Settings → Network & Internet → IP address)
